He attended The Gailer School at Middlebury and Hampshire College.
When he's not traveling, Shafer lives in Brooklyn with his lovely wife, where he works in film and television.
He drives an old Toyota 4Runner, listens to all the music and has been a vegetarian since age 11.

"All you guys talk about is different places and how to get to them," a friend remarked at a recent party. Until that point, we hadn’t realized just how obsessed with maps and roads we truly are. The crew is constantly digging up old photos and maps of places we've been; or scouring the internet and beat up atlases to find new places to visit. Inevitably over beers, our conversations turn to these stories from the road and new spots we’ve dredged up. Shafer Guide was created as a space to round up these stories, locations and maps; to share them, remember them and possible entertain our visitors.
